Opportunities

We have opportunities within the Biodiversity Research Group to apply for postdoctoral, PhD and Honours projects, as well as volunteer work. Our group has a range of exciting current projects that involve both field work and large spatial data analyses, GIS and global biodiversity research in both terrestrial and marine systems, including:

  • Prioritization of action for confronting invasive alien mammals and birds in Australia
  • The role of interactions between invasive alien species in shaping introduction success
  • Bird conservation and interactions between native and introduced birds
  • Urban biodiversity and ecology of urban birds
  • Incorporating socio-political drivers into conservation prioritization
  • Island biodiversity and conservation
  • Coastal area conservation
  • Island conservation, introduced species, feral animals and threatened species
  • Marine and coastal conservation planning and prioritisation
  • Conservation planning and prioritization in the Mediterranean Basin and Sea
  • The role of cross-boundary collaboration in conservation (terrestrial, marine and freshwater systems)
  • Conservation prioritisation and collaboration in the world’s largest rivers
  • Biodiversity along environmental gradients and ecotone in the face of global change
  • Science-policy gaps in biodiversity conservation

UQ has an excellent program Masters of Conservation Biology or Science program, which is teaching-based and has a one semster project.

We also offer an MPhil degree, but this is less common and we prefer to support a PhD application rather than MPhil. For domestic students, there are two application rounds a year. for international students that would like to apply for a PhD with our group please first check the UQ eligibility. UQ scholarships for international PhD students are highly competitive and would require at least 1-2 peer-reviewed papers with you as the first author in very good international journals to be competitive, very strong reference letters and a high GPA for previous degrees. If you already have your own scholarship from your home country, please let us know.
